Last year, Robbie Robertson, the legendary leader of the Band, passed away at the age of 80. On Thursday night, the Kia Forum in Los Angeles hosted a huge Robertson tribute concert that featured many of Robertson’s peers and admirers. Notably, the show included a number of the people who performed with the band in The Last Waltz, their classic Martin Scorsese-directed concert film. Variety reports that Scorsese himself, who served as one of the executive producers of the Forum tribute show, filmed the night’s performances for a forthcoming concert film. If you weren’t in the building last night, you may want to wait for the Scorsese film. But if you’re impatient, there’s always camera-phone footage.
Last night’s tribute concert featured Last Waltz stars Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, and Mavis Staples, alongside the likes of Bob Weir, Lucinda Williams, Jim James, Eric Church, Bruce Hornsby, Taj Mahal, Trey Anastasio, Warren Haynes, Daniel Lanois, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Jamey Johnson. Here’s Mavis Staples performing “The Weight” with Bob Weir and Trey Anastasio:
And here’s Bob Weir doing a fully-solo version of “When I Paint My Masterpiece”:
Eric Clapton led a five-song mini-set at the concert. Here he is, doing “The Shape I’m In”:
Van Morrison played three of his own songs at last night’s show. Here he is, doing “Tupelo Honey”:
Here’s My Morning Jacket’s Jim James covering “It Makes No Difference”:
Here’s Eric Church’s take on “Up On Cripple Creek”:
And here’s Church’s fellow grizzled country star Jamey Johnson’s version of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”:
Finally, here’s Daniel Lanois playing “Broken Arrow,” the Robbie Robertson solo song that he co-produced:
